WORTH, WORTHY, or WORTHWHILE?

Halo sahabat PPIA UniSA. Kita biasa mengatakan, “It is expensive, but it is worth it.”

Contoh:

  • How much is this antique coin worth? It is worth one thousand dollars.
  • It didn’t seem that this argument worth our time.
  • She was worth his honor and his life.

To be worth it bermakna ‘to be of reasonable or good value for the price’ (sepadan dengan harganya). Worthy juga bermakna sama.

Contoh:

  • This Kathmandu jacket costs me $120, but it was worth it for such a good quality.
  • I took a last minute flight that was expensive, but it was worth it for being there when he is sick.
  • It is expensive, but it is worthy.

Worthwhile adalah kata sifat yang bersifat atributif (menjelaskan kata benda) dan kata sifat predikatif (digunakan setelah kata kerja tertentu, missal be, seem, look).

Contoh:

  • This job is a worthwhile career for a fresh graduate. (not: this job is a worth career for a fresh graduate)
  • My long waiting for him seems worthwhile. We will be married soon.
